Carbon dioxide CO₂ cylinder filling Instructions
or how to fill a small pin valve CO₂ Cylinder.

Some things you will need and may need:

• Warm protective insulated gloves required - necessary.
• Cylinder of LIQUID CARBON DIOXIDE - necessary.
  Standard CO₂ cylinders all have liquid in them as long as they are filled but come in two types. Gas and Syphon.
  • Gas cylinders stand upright and releases gas from the evaporation liquid when the valve is opened - this type of cylinder must be turned upside down in order to obtain liquid CO₂ to refill any cylinder.
  • Syphon cylinders have a tube from the valve to the bottom of the cylinder so that when the valve is opened liquid CO₂ comes out without having to invert the bottle.
  
  All CO₂ cylinders contain liquid and the pressure inside the cylinder remains the same (it does vary by temperature) as long as liquid remains.
• Small scale to weigh cylinder before and after filling is required if you intend to fill the cylinder completely.
• DOT 3E cylinders never needs re-certification. This does not apply to other cylinders not marked with DOT 3E. You must be mindful that most other CO₂ cylinders must be recertified every 5 years for safety considerations.

All KegMan constant pressure cylinder filling station is designed to re-fill all Constant Pressure (C.P.) pin valve CO₂ cylinders with liquid carbon dioxide (CO₂). Please note that these cylinders must be filled with liquid CO₂. These cylinders are designed to contain a MAXIMUM of the designated weight of CO₂ in liquid form. Exceeding the allowed weight of liquid CO₂ could result in the blow out safety disk rupturing and requiring a replacement disk.

Procedure:

• Connect and tighten the refilling station to the source of liquid CO₂. Do not forget to use a CO₂ stem washer.
• Using another CO₂ stem washer, attach the small cylinder to be refilled to the refilling station. Hand tighten
• Turn the ball valve to the closed position by rotating the handle to the 90º to flow axis position.
• Open the main CO₂ cylinder's valve fully.
• Let the filling begin:
  • To completely fill the cylinder:
    • Open the ball valve and allow the CO₂ to push the air from the system. This should take less than a second even with the valve barely open.
    • Now fully tighten the cylinder
    • Open the ball valve to the liquid source and allow the cylinder to be filled for 10 - 15 seconds. The needle valve will be pushed out of the way by the gas pressure and allow some liquid to enter the small cylinder to be filled.
    • Close the valve and remove the cylinder from the liquid CO₂ filling station.
    • With the cylinder held in the upright position, wearing protective insulated gloves, depress the pin valve and quickly let all the CO₂ rush from the cylinder. This will freeze the cylinder and prepair it for complete filling.
    • Install the cylinder onto the liquid CO₂ source and continue as partial fill below but be sure not to allow the culinder to warm up too much:
  • To partially fill the cylinder for home use or to continue from above:
  • Using a CO₂ stem washer (again), attach the small cylinder to be refilled to the refilling station. Hand tighten.
  • Open the ball valve and allow the CO₂ to push the air from the system. This should take less than a second even with the valve barely open.
  • Now fully tighten the cylinder to the fill station.
  • Open the ball valve to the liquid source and allow the cylinder to be filled for 1 - 2 minutes. The needle valve will be pushed out of the way by the gas pressure and allow some liquid to enter the small cylinder to be filled. Due to the temperature difference in the two cylinders large one at room temperature and the small one being very cold the pressure in the loarge cylinder is enough to keep the pin valve from preventing the fill.
  • Remove the cylinder using gloves or other protective devices and weigh the cylinder to be sure you have not exceed the allowed maximum weight of liquid CO₂. If you have bleed off the over fill amount with a pin depressor and gloves.
